Don Letts 2016-10-16 79 Style

“Don presents his selections from 1979, the year he was making videos for the Clash and the Slits, and he features Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall as his Crucial Vinyl.
Don says, “Many would have you think the late seventies was all about punk, the emerging post punk scene and the golden age of reggae, and for many of us it was. But a quick look at the diverse releases around that time reveals a story that’s not quite that simple – hey, it never is. In keeping with 6 Music’s 1979 theme, this show will feature an honest reflection of what was really going on for me at the time, with culture clash of cuts, which, for example, will include Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall as my Crucial Vinyl album… Especially since fellow station DJ Steve Lamacq’s already bagged London Calling!”
Born in London in 1956, Don’s Jamaican father was a part-time DJ, who’d play ska and more on his own sound system after church on Sundays. Don’s love of music matured in the seventies as he immersed himself funk and soul as well reggae, rock and much else. He began his career as a DJ forty years ago in 1976 at the Roxy in London’s Covent Garden, which was Britain’s first punk club. He played reggae and dub tracks between live sets from the likes of the Slits, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Buzzcocks. He briefly managed the Slits, but turned to making films. In 1978, he travelled to Jamaica with Johnny Rotten (as he was still known), who’d recently quit the Sex Pistols. Then, in New York with his friends the Clash, he was introduced to rap and hip hop. The seventies was the decade that really shaped Don’s musical tastes.”
