Mark Radford – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX538 2020-12-17

“Setting the record straight on deep tech.
Mark Radford has provided the soundtrack for countless joyful nights for dancers across the world and London in particular. As a driving force behind the sound dubbed deep tech, Radford shaped a new style that was one of the most popular dance music cultures in London over the last decade. He’s held some of the longest residencies at key institutions like Rinse FM and Ministry Of Sound, while his label Audio Rehab has been the test bed for deep tech’s development since 2012.
Despite his popularity on dance floors, Radford’s work has not been sufficiently documented by dance music media, which is a key topic in this conversation with journalist Marcus Barnes. They also cover the injustice of the stigma attached to the dance style known as shuffling, with which Radford became associated. We also hear of his formative years attending London venue Dungeons and the influence of inspirational pioneers like Jumping Jack Frost, as well as the continuing rejuvenation of the deep tech sound.”

Tailor Jae – Resident Advisor podcast #758 2020-12-13

“Lively UK club sounds from a rising London DJ.
Tailor Jae is in a spot many young DJs find themselves in the end of 2020: a gigging career ground to halt just as they were on the precipice of wider international success. The London DJ has been working up a storm as if there was no pandemic, however, releasing mixes for major platforms all year and sharpening a sound that has real crossover potential. Jae has been interviewed several times in these pages—she was the recipient of RA’s scholarship with music school Point Blank—and she usually comes back to one idea: “playing whatever I want.”
For Jae, that means threading in grime, drill and rap in between bubbly garage, jungle and broken beat UK club sounds. For her, there’s no difference between any of these things, which is kind of how it should be, and it offers an accessible way into club music for outsiders or dilettantes. With killer taste, an ear for hooks and a well-honed DJing style, it’s easy to imagine her being a big radio DJ one day, breaking new tunes for the mainstream and introducing them to underground club music. For now, she’s just one of London’s best young DJs.”

Year In Review 2020 – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX537 2020-12-10

“Typically the annual Year In Review podcast gives Resident Advisor staffers a chance to talk about standout events and releases of the year. With the former all but stopped and the latter becoming a matter of survival for many independent artists, this year’s edition looks at the continuing fallout from the dance music economy grinding to a halt.
Writers, DJs and RA contributors Ash Lauryn and Tajh Morris, AKA Turtle Bugg, sat down with staff writer Matt McDermott to think through some of the questions raised by the pandemic while shining a light on standout releases from the likes of Marcellus Pittman, Stefan Ringer and Byron the Aquarius.”

Tim Reaper – Resident Advisor podcast #757 2020-12-06

“Modern-day jungle from an old soul.
Jungle is as alive and well as it’s ever been. Just ask Tim Reaper—in the last ten years he’s created a flourishing career for himself making old-school(ish) jungle for a network of labels that represent this scene: 7th Storey, Foxy Jangle, Parallax Recordings, Lickshot and plenty more. More recently, after releasing the standout track on a Lobster Theremin compilation, he inked a deal with the label to release a crossover EP of sorts, earning him the biggest audience he’s had yet. On top of that, he runs a few labels like Globex Corp—reserved for his work with frequent collaborator Dwarde—and Future Retro, where he releases the Meeting Of The Minds series.
Tim Reaper feels like a natural ringleader for this scene not just because he’s a talented producer and DJ. He has a deep and healthy understanding of this music and of what came before him, too. (Watch him handily win a trainspotting competition on Electronic Beats here.) He calls his new label Future Retro, which just about explains it: the music he makes and releases is in thrall to the past, but not simply out to recreate it. What Reaper and his compatriots like Coco Bryce, Dwarde, Kloke and FFF do is find new wrinkles in the old jungle sound, imagining alternate futures or new directions the scene could have taken if it never evolved into what we now know as drum & bass. Yes, you could argue people have always made jungle, but Reaper and friends have made it into a bigger, stronger community with a whole new following.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that Reaper’s mix, made up almost entirely of new material from the labels he runs and helps with, was a classic jungle history lesson. But then you wouldn’t recognize any of the tracks, either. This 90-minute mix is a tour of today’s jungle scene through some of its brightest producers, with plenty of precision break choppage, infectious samples and the occasional dip into pre-jungle UK hardcore territory. Like time travelling from 1994 direct to 2020, there’s something about this mix that is both deeply nostalgic and bravely futuristic. This is one for old junglists as much as it is for people looking for a way into one of the most exciting scenes and sounds that dance music has ever seen.”

Annie Nightingale – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX533 2020-11-12

“When Annie Nightingale became the first female DJ on the BBC in 1970, she had already had her finger on the pulse of the newly-developing youth and pop culture of ’60s Britain. Now with a half-century broadcasting under her belt, her new memoir Hey Hi Hello shows how she remained a prescient reader of the times in all the decades since. Despite working within the establishment, she consistently caught on to and promoted important musical currents emerging from new subcultures, from punk to drill and acid house.
With a career that dovetails with a broad cross-section of musical developments across five decades, Nightingale is not short of stories and insights. In conversation with Martha Pazienti Caidan, we hear about being sworn at by Johnny Rotten, drill as the new punk, and valuable advice for aspiring broadcasters.”

Lenny Dee – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX505 2020-04-9

“Hardcore, gabba, breakbeat techno, rave—Vivian Host hears from the New Yorker who pioneered them all.
New York native Lenny “Dee” Didesiderio is considered by many the first hardcore techno DJ. In 1991 he introduced America to the hardcore techno sound when he started the first label devoted to the style, Industrial Strength Records. Since launching with Marc Acardipane’s timeless “Mescalinium United,” Industrial Strength remains a central node for hardcore music 28 years later. But Didesiderio’s work before hardcore became a fully fledged sound is equally significant.
It’s difficult to underestimate Didesiderio’s impact on the UK and Europe’s nascent rave scenes. Few artists at the time had a hand in so many anthems—both The Morning After and the debut Looney Tunes EP (which helped kick off XL Recordings) are stamped indelibly into the collective rave consciousness, while his contributions to the Bonesbreaks series helped cement the breakbeat’s presence in early techno. Yet even before then, Didesiderio was Arthur Baker’s production assistant, amassing credits with artists diverse as Nile Rodgers, N-Joy and New Order.
RA contributor Vivian Host joins Didesiderio for the most extensive examination of his work to date, exploring the myriad nooks and crannies of a career whose significance is coming into ever sharper relief.”

Orbital – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX504 2020-04-02

“The brothers Hartnoll tell their story live from inner city electronic.
Phil and Paul Hartnoll’s story as Orbital is a quintessential tale of UK rave culture. Their musical, cultural and political backgrounds speak to the temper of the late ’80s. This is a group who came from punk, electro and hip-hop, grew up in a golden era for sci-fi soundtracks, watched ecstasy change the mood during the drudgery of Thatcherism, and took part in the explosion of DIY enthusiasm around acid house.
Orbital were “shot out of a human cannon” from their first release Chime, which literally took them from washing dishes to Top Of The Tops overnight. From there they became an exemplary of rave culture translating to the mainstream, earning acceptance from massive audiences thanks to their clear and present harmonic content and stadium-sized dynamics. The Hartnoll’s talked through how it all came together live with writer Matt Anniss last month as part of Leeds festival inner city electronic’s conference programme.”

VTSS – Resident Advisor podcast #703 2020-03-30

“Dark and rowdy club sounds.
Over the last few years, Martyna Maja has emerged as one of techno’s most rebellious new voices. Her sound is tastefully hard and thrillingly vicious, something she says she learned from Poland’s underground scene—clubs like Jasna1, the former party Brutaz and the WIXAPOL crew—which introduced her to the strains of EBM, industrial, hardcore and neo-gabber that give her style a fresh twist. In the DJ booth, as Will Lynch once put it, Maja has a “freestyling, don’t-give-a-fuck attitude,” a quality that can be applied to everything she touches, from her mixing style, production work and choice of collaborators (fellow rule breakers like SPFDJ and Varg) down to her piss-taking social media presence.
Maja’s enjoyed a meteoric rise as a DJ since moving from Warsaw to Berlin in 2018, playing on industrial-heavy lineups like Amsterdam’s Katharsis Festival to experimental events like Atonal, CTM and Unsound. Her productions, too, have earned a passionate following, once again defying expectations for what techno, EBM and acid can be. Her mix for RA, made up of mostly new tracks she’s been playing out recently, accelerates through these peak-time rave styles with an extrovert’s touch. In this period of social-distancing, RA.722 is an evil reminder of just how wicked a night at the club can be.”
